A note on where these came from
Every previous month on this page was counted by hand: thirty-one daily reports from App Store Connect, a separate pull from Abner for the direct apps, and a spreadsheet holding it together. It took most of an evening and it was wrong in small ways I could not see.
This month I built a dashboard instead. It joins App Store Connect, Stripe, Google Play, Abner, Search Console and my licence server into one product registry and one revenue picture, with a rule about what a number is allowed to claim: a month is an estimate until Apple’s settled financial report arrives, and then it becomes an actual, and the two never both count toward the same total.
Two things it caught that I would have gotten wrong. RingMix looks like it earned $18.68 in August. It did not: it sold one annual subscription in Canada on the 10th and refunded it on the 18th, and Apple’s report states the refund’s customer price as a negative on a negative unit, which multiplies back to a positive. Net revenue on RingMix in August is three cents below zero. And the raw unit counts include app updates, which for an app that shipped seven versions in a month is most of the number. Léelo’s 93 downloads sit next to 224 updates. Counting those as downloads would have inflated the month to 1,597 and it would have looked like growth.
The figures above are first-time downloads only, updates and redownloads excluded, which is the same basis every previous month used. As a check, I ran August’s method over July and got 364 App Store downloads against the 362 the July post reported by hand.
What Happened
July’s post set August at 600 downloads, $400 in revenue, and 3 apps shipped. Downloads landed at 1,107 and revenue at $813.96. Two apps shipped.
The third is Scrubb, and it is not live. The Mac build was rejected over a window you could close and not reopen, which is a fair rejection and a small fix. The iPhone and iPad build has been sitting in Waiting for Review since the 28th. It is finished, the site is up, and none of that makes it shipped, so it does not count.
Message Album went out on the 16th and did $29.00 on its first sale. It exports one Messages conversation into an offline folder with a checksum manifest, sold direct at $29 because reading the Messages library needs Full Disk Access and the App Store sandbox will not grant it. Just SFTP went direct on the 18th and cleared the Mac App Store on the 28th at $12.99, free download with a one-time unlock. Neither had a full month to earn anything, and neither did.
Soundshine was the download story: 237 on the site against 98 in July, on the back of the search work I did in the two weeks I was not shipping apps. Soundshine Record went from 6 downloads to 34 and from $29.98 to $139.49, which is the clearest evidence yet that splitting Route and Record into two apps was right. Together the pair did $253.01, a third of the month.
Léelo was the revenue story and the one that surprised me: $199.77 from three lifetime unlocks and four paid subscriptions, up from $7.00 in July. It also got seven versions and 224 updates, which is what a month of hard maintenance looks like from the outside. Seven more people started free trials.
SongSplit AI had its best month again at 198 downloads. Just Habits sold 11 unlocks, ContactPDF sold 5, and both of those are apps I did not touch. TodoBar had 48 downloads and sold nothing at all, which it has now done every month since it launched in May.
Blindfold did zero downloads. Not one. That is the app that consumed most of July and half of August, that has three pieces of server infrastructure standing behind it, and its one shipping feature is a Safari content blocker that nobody found this month. I do not have a comfortable read on that yet.
September Goals
- 1,200 downloads
- $900 in revenue
- Ship 3 apps, and get Scrubb approved
