Gratuity Is Live

Every Tuesday I ship something. This week it is Gratuity, a free tip calculator for iPhone.

The math at the end of a restaurant meal is never difficult, but it is always annoying. Someone has to do it, and however you split it, someone feels like they overpaid. Gratuity handles all three scenarios your group might land on: a quick tip calculation, a split by what each person ordered, or a straight even divide.

What is in the app

Quick tip: Enter the bill total, tap a percentage (15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, or a custom amount), and instantly see the tip and total. You can add people to split it right from the same screen without switching views.

Split by item: Add each item to the bill and assign it to a person. Gratuity calculates what each person owes individually, including their share of the tip. This is the one that actually ends the “I only had the salad” argument.

Even split: Divide the total equally across any number of people. One tap to see exactly what each person owes.

Tip on pre-tax toggle: If your group prefers to tip on the pre-tax amount, there is a toggle for that. It applies across all three modes.

Why I built it

Tip calculators are a solved problem, which is exactly why I wanted to build one. The interesting constraint was that it had to be completely free with no ads and no in-app purchases. The existing options in this category are either covered in ads, overly complicated, or hiding the useful features behind a paywall.

Gratuity does the math, gets out of the way, and costs nothing. That is it.

Privacy

The app runs entirely on your iPhone. No accounts, no network requests, no analytics, no data of any kind leaves your device.
